Our senses help us every day through life. Our sense of smell is one of the most powerful, as it can trigger emotional and neurological changes within the body.
The nerve that connects our sense of smell is called the Olfactory Nerve. This nerve, like all nerves, sends signals throughout the body. The Olfactory Nerve sends the signals throughout the brain and the limbic system. We know how powerful the brain is, but here is a quick lesson on your limbic system.
The limbic system is made up of the amygdala, hippocampus, thalamus, cingulate gyrus, basal ganglia, and the hypothalamus. The key essential here are the Amygdala. This section of the limbic system is considered the emotional center of the brain. The limbic system is also in charge of our nervous system, which can trigger the deep sensations of fight or flight. It also can:
· Quicken our breathing patterns
· Increase our heart rate
· Raise our blood pressure
· Deepen our breathing patterns
· Relax our parasympathetic nervous system
· Quite the jungle of thoughts in our mind
By understanding the deeper connections of the body, we can then understand how powerful essential oils can be for us, when used properly.
The use of essential oils is commonly referred to Aromatherapy. By using the powerful scents, this alternative medicinal practice taps into the healing powers from within. Essential oils are usually extracted from plants, and can be diluted by water, or diffused in the air. Studies continue to show that the use of aromatherapy can help relax the body, promote healthier sleeping patterns, and make positive changes in the mind.
